The Department of Emergency Medicine, Division of Clinical Ultrasound, at the U-M Medical School is recruiting an academic faculty member to serve as the Advanced Emergency Medicine Ultrasound (AEMUS) Fellowship Director for its EUFAC-accredited AEMUS fellowship. The position has responsibility, authority, and accountability for the AEMUS fellowship at U-M.

Areas of responsibility will include

  • Leading administration and operations of the fellowship
  • Leading US fellow recruitment and selection
  • Assessing and managing fellow competency, professionalism, and development in education, research, and services domains.
  • Leading AEMUS fellow clinical ultrasound curriculum and education
  • Co-directing the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Ultrasound Fellowship and Family Medicine Ultrasound Fellowship
  • Ensuring continued Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship Accreditation Council (EUFAC) accreditation.
  • Participate in teaching, scholarly activity, and other duties as assigned by the Division Chief as a member of the Clinical Ultrasound Division.

Reporting Structure

Reports to the Division of Clinical Ultrasound Chief and Associate Chair for Education.

Clinical Effort

The total expected number of clinical hours per year for this role is 1,056 hours. In addition, members of the Clinical Ultrasound Division Faculty perform a variable amount of their clinical hours as clinical ultrasound scanning time, which may range from 48-144 hours of their annual clinical target.

Job Description

The Department of Emergency Medicine at Michigan Medicine is recruiting an academic dual-boarded emergency medicine/critical care faculty to join its innovative and growing Division of Critical Care. This position will include clinical time in the Emergency Critical Care Center (EC3), adult emergency department, and 6-10 weeks of Cardiovascular ICU (CVICU) day/night coverage. EC3 is an unique 9-bed ICU housed within our emergency department that is dedicated to the initial diagnosis, stabilization, and ongoing care of critically ill patients. The Michigan Medicine CVICU is a 32-bed ICU that cares for critically ill adult cardiothoracic surgical patients by providing cardiopulmonary support including ventricular assist devices, total artificial heart systems, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

Qualifications

  • Candidates should demonstrate clinical excellence and strong interest in critical care clinical operations, quality improvement, scholarship, or education.
  • Candidates must be ABA, ABEM, ABIM, or ABS critical care medicine board-certified or board-eligible with clinical experience in cardiothoracic ICU.
  • Board certification in emergency medicine is also required.

The Division of EMS Prehospital Medicine within the Department of Emergency Medicine is seeking a faculty member to serve as an education-focused EMS Faculty Member. This position has a focus on EMS physician education, including resident and fellow teaching and scholarly activity; fellow recruitment and selection, evaluation and promotion of fellows, supervision of residents and fellows; and resident/fellow education in the context of patient care. The program director must conduct the program in a fashion consistent with the needs of our local community, the mission(s) of the U-M Medical School and the Department of Emergency Medicine, and the mission(s) of the EMS Fellowship program.

Qualifications

  • Must be EMS Board Certified with EMS subspecialty expertise and current clinical activity in the practice of EMS.
  • Should include demonstrated participation in academic societies and educational programs designed to enhance his or her educational and administrative skills.
  • Must plan to continue in this position for a length of time adequate to maintain continuity of leadership and program stability.

Qualifications

  • Must be EMS Board Certified with at least three years of EMS subspecialty expertise and current clinical activity in the practice of EMS.
  • Must have at least three years’ experience as a core physician faculty member in an ACGME-accredited emergency medicine program or emergency medical services program.
  • Must plan to continue in this position for a length of time adequate to maintain continuity of leadership and program stability.
  • Must demonstrate at least 10 hours per week of his or her professional effort dedicated to the fellowship, with sufficient time for administration of the program.
  • Must meet any other minimum criteria for appointment as dictated by ACGME requirements.
  • Should include demonstrated participation in academic societies and educational programs designed to enhance his or her educational and administrative skills.

Summary 

The U-M Medical School’s Department of Emergency Medicine is seeking a dynamic Division Chief of Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM). This individual would provide vision, leadership, and oversee all divisional missions, including pediatric emergency care delivery, education, scholarship, and advocacy. The Division Chief reports directly to the Chair of Emergency Medicine. The Division Chief will have a joint appointment in the Departments of Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics, the latter being a dotted line reporting relationship to the Chair of the Department of Pediatrics.

Qualifications 

Candidates must have an MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent clinical doctoral degree, have an academic record commensurate with appointment at the rank of Associate or full Professor, and be eligible for licensure in Michigan. Further, the candidate should have a proven track record in advancing clinical growth, research programs, a demonstrated commitment to education, significant administrative, budgetary, and philanthropic experience, and the leadership qualities to help advance a highly collegial and collaborative department. The Division Chief will need to demonstrate integrity and a deep commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion to foster a safe and inclusive environment that embraces the uniqueness of all people.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

1. Provide strategic vision and guidance to strengthen the clinical operations of the Division and Department

The Division Chief will provide leadership for emergency pediatric care at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and represent Emergency Medicine at the Mott Hospital leadership level (example, Mott Executive Committee, Pediatric Directors Advisory Council to the Chair, etc.). Clinical oversight of care delivery includes supervision of the Children’s Emergency Services (CES) Medical Director and Clinical Service Chief who, in partnership with our Clinical Nurse Manager, oversees day-to-day clinical operations. The Division Chief will be responsible for and partner with the hospital’s clinical enterprise to strategically plan for new and innovative service delivery models. Examples include telemedicine, hospital at home programs etc. The Division Chief will also be responsible for strategically planning clinical coverage and ensuring that there is sufficient faculty effort for current and future models of care delivery.

2. Encourage and support forward-thinking educational opportunities

The Division Chief will provide oversight, in partnership with the Associate Chair for Education, of the educational programs delivered by the PEM Division, which houses the PEM Fellowship Program and has training responsibilities for emergency medicine, pediatric and family medicine residencies and U-M Medical School students. The Division Chief will adjudicate professionalism issues among faculty and trainees and provide support for new and innovative educational initiatives within the division. The PEM Fellowship Director reports directly to the Division Chief and the Associate Chair for Education.

3. Maintain and grow the Division and Department’s national research prestige by supporting the research agenda

Our current PEM faculty research interests include Children’s Health Services Research (University of Michigan Health has a premier pediatric HSR program), injury prevention, disaster preparedness, pediatric emergency operations, informatics, sepsis, quality in PEM and many others. Although not a requirement, it is highly desirable that the Division Chief pursues extramural funding for scholarly work for themselves and support faculty applying for such support. Furthermore, in collaboration with the Associate Chair for Research, the Division Chief will be expected to grow the reputation of the Division and Department nationally and globally by nurturing careers of academic faculty, identifying a pipeline of early career investigators, and strategically recruiting and advocating for retention of high caliber academic faculty. Additionally, the Division Chief will encourage research growth by supporting faculty in building relationships outside the department with external collaborators.

4. Support faculty recruitment, retention, and mentorship

The Division Chief will be responsible for developing the division’s academic mission and its faculty. The Chief will collaborate with the EM Chair and faculty search committee to oversee the hiring and development of the faculty for the Division. The Chief will also conduct an annual review with each faculty member to review their performance and help them establish goals for the upcoming year. In addition, the Division Chief will support the Medical Director of Emergency Medicine at Hurley Hospital with recruitment and development of that site’s PEM faculty. In addition to faculty development, the Director, with assistance from the Service Chief, will be responsible to the Chair and the Health System and Medical School leaders for faculty performance improvement.

5. Advocacy for the Division

The Division Chief will collaborate with the Associate Chair for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) to support faculty initiatives in the department to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion and faculty wellness, as well as help identify funding opportunities and sources for these initiatives. In addition, the Division Chief will be an advocate for the Division through representing the Division to external stakeholders, including with the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital leadership and the Department of Pediatrics, and other Hospital or Medical School committees. The Division Chief will also work in identifying philanthropic opportunities to advance the academic mission of the Division.

6. Ensuring financial success of the Division

The Division Chief will partner with the Chair, the Associate Chairs of Emergency Medicine, and other clinical and administrative leaders to steward resources and improve the financial and performance metrics of the PEM Division. The Division Chief will collaborate with the EM Chair to ensure sustained alignment with the Department’s strategic plan and budget and is responsible for appropriate management of divisional funds and division program initiatives using those funds.

Reporting

The Division Chief of Pediatric Emergency Medicine reports directly to the Department Chair.

Term

5 years with annual review by the Department Chair, with possibility for renewal.

The University of Michigan Department of Emergency Medicine is actively recruiting highly motivated pediatric emergency medicine faculty for our division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine. Candidates who have completed their PEM training through pediatrics or emergency medicine residency pathways will be given equal consideration. Specifically, we are looking for qualified candidates who will be willing to work clinically and have experience and/or expertise in the following areas of strategic interest:

  • Research faculty in all aspects of EMSC (emergency medical services for children) – specifically, we are especially interested PEM faculty with advanced research training (MPH, PhD) and those who either have extramural grant funding or are interested in a career in research in PEM.
  • Informatics and large data analytics including machine learning and AI
  • Prehospital care and EMS

Stroke Epidemiology Junior Faculty or Post-doctoral Fellowship Position 

The Departments of Neurology and Emergency Medicine at The University of Michigan Medical School have an outstanding opportunity for an epidemiologist to join our thriving Stroke Division. The position is at the level of Assistant Professor in the non-tenure seeking Research Track or Post-doctoral Fellow.

The successful applicant will hold a PhD in Epidemiology and possess a very strong quantitative and methodological background. The Stroke Division has multiple NIH R01s in epidemiology and health services research. The focus of our research includes health equity, the association of sleep disordered breathing and stroke, end-of-life decision making, bilingualism, brain health, and delivery of acute stroke therapies. We have substantial collaborations with the University of Michigan School of Public Health and other units on campus. The successful applicant will be aligned with multiple Stroke Neurology and Emergency Medicine faculty to form a mentorship team and collaborate in a way that leverages the junior faculty or post-doctoral fellow’s expertise while supporting their efforts to gain specialized training and emerge competitive for independent grant funding. The Stroke Neurology faculty are expert mentors with a successful track record of helping junior faculty and post-doctoral fellows succeed.

Absolute Requirements for Applicants:
-    PhD in Epidemiology, not in a related field
-    Strong quantitative and methodological skills
-    Prior publication record
-    Strong written and oral communication skills
-    Strong commitment to working with a team of investigators
-    Eligible to work in the U.S.A

Preferred Qualifications:
-    Previous research work in stroke or health equity
-    Prior grant writing experience
-     Experience in mixed methods or qualitative research
-    Experience in geographic data visualization (GIS or similar)

-    Ability/experience mentoring, teaching, or collaborating with students, residents, fellows and junior faculty

-    Provide epidemiologic expertise for on-going and new research studies of the Stroke Program
-    Gain additional expertise in methods or topical areas that complement their doctoral training

-    Participate in educational, mentoring, or collaborative activities for students, residents, fellows and junior faculty
-    Participate in efforts to build interdisciplinary collaborations between Neurology, Emergency Medicine (Medical School) and other units on campus including Epidemiology (School of Public Health)
