Health Science Education Innovation (HSEI)

Explore our guiding framework, competencies and culture philosophy.

HSEI Guiding Framework

Health science education innovations (HSEI) are new ideas with the potential to change existing approaches in teaching and learning, scale to different areas and learners, and improve practice and health. We developed an HSEI Guiding Framework based on existing literature and input from HSE faculty, staff and learners to help evaluate innovations in three domains: impact, translation and scale.

Degree of Impact

Health science education innovations impact teaching and learning—with an aim to adjust, modify, or transform processes or systems within science, health and/or health care.

Translation of Outcomes

Health science education innovations translate findings into health and science practice and outcomes. They aim to improve knowledge, skills, and other attributes, advance health care or science practices and improve health or science outcomes.

Scale of Implementation

Health science education innovations scale into other settings. They aim to be implemented within single, multiple or nation-wide organizations and across the learner continuum.

HSEI Competencies

We identified seven competencies essential to personal and professional development in health science education innovation. These innovation competencies were determined through a review of the literature and refined in collaboration with our Advisory Council members. They have been used to guide funding decisions, develop assessment tools and monitor the longitudinal innovation development of members of our community.

We invite you to use our 1-pagers to learn how to adopt these competencies into your own HSE innovation development and assess your progress.

HSEI Culture

A health science education innovation culture cultivates creative teaching and learning ideas that improve health. Within this culture people are encouraged to demonstrate shared mindsets, values and competencies that extend beyond the status quo. These behaviors create an environment that leverages organizational strengths to implement new ideas that translate into health outcomes.

HSEI Culture Survey

RISE aims to create a Michigan Medicine culture where bold, scalable education innovations impact health and science. As part of our continued efforts to achieve this mission, we launched our second biennial HSEI culture survey (January-April 2021) to all Michigan Medicine employees. The results provided important insights regarding the current HSEI culture and identified strategies to further cultivate education innovation.
