Graduate students in the University of Michigan Medical School Department of Microbiology and Immunology participate actively in a wide range of social and academic functions throughout the year. The many facets of our training make our graduate experience both challenging and rewarding.
Social activities include the annual departmental picnic, a departmental retreat, a new student dinner, and intramural teams in softball, soccer, broomball, and flag football. Meetings of the Organization of Microbiology and Immunology Students (OMIS) provide an occasion for students to discuss committee activities and other student issues and this organization has departmental funding for food and social activities planned by students themselves.
Students are vital to the academic life of the department. Student representatives from the Organization of Microbiology and Immunology Students (OMIS) attend faculty meetings, and graduate students are active members of our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee and provide input on all aspects of curriculum and programming. Students can also serve on Medical School-wide committees such as the Biomedical Graduate Student Council and the Rackham Graduate Student Forum.
OMIS also organizes social events that foster camaraderie and friendships.
Each year, students invite speakers from industry and other academic institutions for seminars sponsored by our department. Journal Clubs and the Student Seminar Series (Micro 812) offer opportunities for presentation of current literature and our own research. National and international meetings are venues for formal presentation of our research to our academic peers. You can also look forward to presenting at the departmental retreat.
Our department has a terrific group of faculty and staff dedicated to helping you navigate your academic journey and supporting you in your research and wellness. In addition, U-M provides abundant research resources through our Biomedical Core facilities and personal and professional resources through OGPS.
We think you will find Microbiology and Immunology to be a diverse, but tight knit community that is highly collaborative and a whole lot of fun! In other words, the perfect place to obtain your graduate degree!
