Hematology & Oncology Fellowship Training Schedule

Individuals in the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program will complete 18 months of clinical experience in hematology and medical oncology. The first year of the fellowship is focused on clinical training. Fellows will complete the remaining six months of clinical effort over the second and third years. Clinical training incorporates both inpatient and outpatient experiences at the University Hospital, Rogel Cancer Center and Veterans Affairs Ann Arbor Healthcare System (VAAAHS).

Required Rotations (18 months total)

During this rotation, typically second or third year fellows are primarily responsible for the inpatient HemOnc consult service at the VA hospital. Fellows maintain their outpatient continuity experience at the University Hospital during this rotation.

During this rotation, typically first year fellows rotate in both the hematology and medical oncology clinics and are responsible for the management of patients receiving outpatient chemotherapy at the VA. The fellows continuity experience at the University Hospital is interrupted during this rotation.
 

Fellows observe and supervise the inpatient care of patients with advanced hematologic malignancies, including acute leukemia, advanced lymphomas and myeloma. Fellows maintain their outpatient continuity experience at the University Hospital during this rotation.
 

Fellows consult on a variety of benign and malignant hematologic conditions to patients hospitalized at the University Hospitals. Fellows maintain their outpatient continuity experience at the University Hospital during this rotation.
 

Fellows observe and supervise the inpatient as well as the outpatient care of patients with advanced hematologic malignancies undergoing autologous as well as allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Fellows will also provide supervised consultation on inpatients regarding autologous and allogeneic transplant issues. Fellows maintain their outpatient continuity experience at the University Hospital during this rotation.
 

Fellows consult on a variety of malignant oncologic conditions to patients hospitalized at the University Hospital. Fellows maintain their outpatient continuity experience at the University Hospital during this rotation.
 

  • Clinics A: Breast, Sarcoma, Gyn Onc (4 weeks)
  • Clinics B: Lung, Head & Neck, Neuro Onc (4 weeks)
  • Clinics C: Genitourinary, Melanoma, Genetics (4 weeks)
  • Clinics D: Gastrointestinal (4 weeks)
  • Clinics H: Hematology (8-10 weeks)

Electives can include, but are not limited to:

  • Cancer Cytogenetics
  • Radiation Oncology
  • Gynecologic Oncology
  • Blood Banking
  • Multi-H - Hematology Clinics

Fellows consult on a variety of patients requiring hospice enrollment for medical situations that require management of end-of-life or other chronic, palliative issues. Fellows maintain their outpatient continuity experience at the University Hospital during this rotation.
 

As required by ACGME, all fellows will have three-month continuity experiences at the Michigan Medicine Rogel Cancer Center, in hematology or oncology, with faculty from the Division of Hematology and Oncology. Three-month block rotations are set to offer maximum exposure to the main disease types. Additionally, all second and third year fellows will be required to do one three-month continuity experience at the VA Hospital Outpatient Clinic.
